Although giving and volunteerism remain a priority in effective employee engagement, today's employees expect much more.
We are pleased to share our newly released 2016 Cone Communications Employee Engagement Study, surveying American employees to determine the attitudes, expectations and behaviors of today's workforce.
The research found that as the boundaries between work and personal life become increasingly blurred, employees want to bring their social consciousness to the workplace. But their expectations far surpass a giving campaign or day of service.
Key findings include:
- Employees Want to Know Employers Care: 93% want to work for a company that cares about them as an individual
- Engaging Employees in CSR Impacts the Bottom Line: 74% say their job is more fulfilling when they are provided with opportunities to make a positive impact on social and environmental issues – and seven-in-10 (70%) would be more loyal to a company that helps them contribute to CSR efforts
- Employees Want a Role in Broader CSR Efforts: 77% say it's important their employer provides them with hands-on activities around environmental responsibility
- Employers Shouldn't Check the Box on Volunteerism with One Type of Activity: Employees see a mix of activities such as company-wide days of service (67%), corporate-led activities throughout the year (67%) and micro-volunteerism (63%) as important
- Millennials Leading the Charge for New Workplace Norms: 64% of Millennials won't work for a company that doesn't have strong social or environmental commitments (vs. 51% U.S. average); 75% would choose to work for a socially responsible company even if the salary was less than other companies (vs. 55% U.S. average)
- Young Gen X Overlooked but Ardent Employee Engagement Supporter: 83% of Young Gen Xers believe it's important for employers to share goals, progress and achievements related to CSR commitments (vs. 75% U.S. average); 68% consider a company's social and environmental commitments when deciding where to work (vs. 58% U.S. average)
