PAN-MASS CHALLENGE SELECTS CONE COMMUNICATIONS AS AOR

BOSTON (October 6, 2014) – Cone Communications (Cone) was selected as agency of record by Pan- Mass Challenge (PMC), an annual bike-a-thon that crosses the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to raise money for life-saving cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The PMC is the most successful fundraising athletic event in the U.S. and donates 100% of every rider-raised dollar directly to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund.

PMC hired Cone, after a competitive review process that included six agencies, to help expand its brand awareness nationally through media relations, speaking opportunities and influencer communications. In addition to its marquis annual ride, the PMC hosts a number of other events throughout the year, including a growing number of kids’ rides that engage families in communities throughout Massachusetts.

“We are very enthusiastic about working with Cone, given its track record promoting and building awareness for issues and organizations,” said PMC founder and executive director Billy Starr. “We continue to build a pre-eminent fundraising brand and we look forward to adding Cone to our roster of dedicated partners.”

“The PMC has a powerful and entrepreneurial story that inspires thousands of riders to participate annually, resulting in raising an unprecedented $414 million dollars for cancer research in 34 years,” said Byron Calamese, executive vice president, Cone’s brand communications practice. “We are proud to add the PMC to our wonderful group of nonprofit clients and to help amplify PMC’s voice on a national stage.”

About the Pan-Mass Challenge

The Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) is an annual bike-a-thon that today raised more money for charity than any other single athletic fundraising event in the world. The PMC was founded in 1980 by Billy Starr, who remains the event’s executive director, an annual cyclist, and a fundraiser. The PMC has since raised $414 million for adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. The event donates 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar directly to the cause. In 2013, the PMC generated more than 50 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue and was Dana-Farber’s single largest contributor. The 2014 goal is to raise $40 million. The PMC has successfully melded support from committed cyclists, volunteers, corporate sponsors and individual contributors. All are essential to the PMC's goal and model: to attain maximum fundraising efficiency while increasing its annual gift. The PMC’s hope and aspiration is to provide Dana-Farber's doctors and researchers with the necessary resources to discover cures for all cancers.
