Vice President, Account Planner

Cone Communications is seeking a consumer-focused, problem-solving, research-driven, truth-finding, process-managing and extremely creative Vice President, Account Planner to join our nationally recognized public relations and marketing agency.  S/he will be a savvy agency leader with uncanny trendspotting abilities and may even be able to see into the future to connect strategies to where the world is heading.

The Vice President, Account Planner will unearth deep consumer and market insights and turn them into creative briefs and ideas, working in lockstep with award-winning creative folks and the smartest account teams around to drive strategy process for key accounts. Additionally, s/he will collaborate with account and new business teams to produce thoughtful, energizing and incontrovertible strategic communications solutions. S/he will be a client-facing idea person who loves the intersection of earned, owned, paid and influencer marketing, and has a passion for insights that fuel the world’s best storytelling, regardless of the communication channel.


Key Responsibilities include:

  • Spearhead a new-to-the-agency planning competency and function
  • Uncover market and customer insights and leverage them into meaningful brand ideas and strategies
  • Deliver deep analysis and understanding of clients’ brands, verticals and emerging trends
  • Develop compelling briefs that inspire creative and innovative ideas
  • Guide the agency’s planning process across multiple accounts by providing data-driven recommendations designed to fuel client brands
  • Collaborate with clients, creative teams and account teams to define the tactics that will activate strategies
  • Think without walls about earned, owned and paid possibilities
  • Participate in new business efforts by conducting market research and presenting key insights to prospective clients
  • Develop agency thought leadership and products centered on account planning expertise (e.g., trend-spotting, cultural opportunities, consumer journeys, message amplification, etc.)
  • Lead growth and business development initiatives


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Strong leadership, presentation skills and client-inspiring charisma
  • Keen understanding of research methodologies and tools; ability to identify trends and patterns
  • Fondness for crafting insightful marketing programs – ideally consumer-driven
  • Understands how to write exceptional briefs and can train others to do the same
  • Experience working with multiple communications channels, including social and emerging technologies
  • Ability to productize services and create revenue opportunities
  • An enthusiasm for visual storytelling and multi-channel marketing
  • Ability to work independently and be comfortable being the expert in the room
  • Effective staff management skills
  • Minimum of 8 years of account/strategic planning experience; PR agency experience is a bonus
  • Ability to travel
